Enclosed by mountains and rich paddy fields, Ziro vaunts abundant flora and fauna. The views these valleys offer are more than just beautiful.
The best time to visit would be around the Ziro Festival of Music, when the whole town is alive and kicking in the spirit of ZFM.
Ziro is known for having cool summers and cooler winters. Have a precise idea of the current weather in Ziro here.
How To Reach Ziro
The best option is to fly to Guwahati and take the overnight train to Naharlagun and take a shared Sumo to Ziro. Sumos are generally in the morning so be sure to plan well.
This humble village is Asia’s second largest. Its beauty starts right from its approach. Surrounded by alluring landscapes, Hong Village has pretty houses amongst rice plantations. They have small ponds around their houses where they sprout seeds. They toss seeds in the pond and once they sprout, put them in the fields.
You can meet some amazing Apatani people and hear their stories or read it through their faces like this century old woman.
Legend has it that the Apatani Tribe had women of grace and beauty. Men from the other tribes would often abduct the Apatani women. This led the Apatani men to have their women’s faces etched with tattoos and make them wear massive nose studs called Yaping Hurlo to make them seem less appealing.
Explore other Bastis
Tajang is even more beautiful and has some hostels.
This gives you an opportunity to meet up with the youth and make some friends. You will also find a couple of homestays to sort out your accommodation woes.
You may also head straight to the St.Claret college and explore that area or make some new friends. It lies beyond the Bulla Basti.
This is around 8 km away from Hapoli, the main centre or market. It offers one of the best view and my picture doesn’t do justice to it. It is believed to be one of the biggest ShivLing in the world. The view from here just cannot be missed.
Another beautiful area to explore, stay and camp would be Siiro. It has a little hilly and darker landscape as there are no rice plantations around but is such a delight to be there. You should take the road from Hapoli and skip the Mani Palyong route via Hong, as neither the road nor the view is worth your time.
Getting here calls for a trek through Hong Village, Pange and Moko. Set towards the north east of Ziro, Talley Valley is a hotspot of biodiversity. Indiahikes hosts treks around Talley Valley.
Apart from those, you could spot pretty animals like this Goat and Mithun and feed them some salt.
Or help the locals cut their crop. They will feed you some of the best local food after they call off their work for the day or maybe go Grasshopper Hunting during the nights.
The entire town loves Dog Meat that having it itself is considered a celebration.
In restaurants, you can try some Fish Curry Thali and Pork Chilly at Hapoli Market.
Frogs, Chicken Feet, Pike Pilla-a local pork dish, Ngilyang-Sudu Ngi Bamboo Fish.
Crunchy Grasshoppers ( The Best Chakna ) with local beer Apong
Apong-their local rice beer made in every house, comes in different forms varying in taste and distillation and is also believed to be medicinal by some. It is made by the Apatani women after a series of process and is must have.
An annual harvest festival of Arunachal Pradesh called ‘Dree’ is celebrated with great zest and is accompanied by sacrificial offerings and prayers every July.
